- According to author Kenneth C. Davis, July 2nd is the real day of independence, but it's celebrated on the 4th because that's when congress accepted Jefferson's declaration.
- Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence on a "laptop," which was a writing desk that could fit on one's lap.
- John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826. James Monroe died on July 4, 1831. Calvin Coolidge was born on July 4, 1872.
- Only two men signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 - John Hancock and Charles Thompson.
- Jefferson's original draft of the declaration of independence was lost, and the one eventually signed is the engrossed document.
- The printed version of the Declaration was called Dunlap Broadside; 200 were made but only 27 are accounted for.
- Congress declared July 4th as an official holiday in 1870.
- The "Star Spangled Banner" was written by Francis Scott Key and was originally a poem from his observations in 1814 concerning the British attack on Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. It was later put to music, and decreed the official national anthem in 1931.
- July 4th marks a day of liberation in both the Philippines and Rwanda as well. June 12th has been the Philippines official Independence Day since 1962 but Rwandans celebrate "Liberation Day" on July 4th.
- July 4th is the biggest hot dog holiday of the year, according to TIME magazine, with Americans reportedly consuming about 155 million of them on Independence Day alone.
