Today is one
of my favorite holidays and my hubby’s birthday!! I am so excited for both
these events; however, it is also the day we find out if the twins have a
neural tube defect going on and I’m quite nervous with what the results are
going to be. Our test levels came back abnormally high, 4.55 – anything above
2.5 is high… Our appointment is at 10:00am.
Update:
2:00pm
Where to
actually start… Praise the Lord there is NOTHING wrong with either baby!
We arrived
today at the office and they took us back right away. I got undressed and
waited for the doctor. Eric was with me. We both took the day off in order to
get this done. The doctor came in and right away asked how I was feeling,
wanted to know if I had had any bleeding or anything abnormal. We talked for a
little bit about my history and then he said do you know why you’re here today?
I said yes, for a few things. We want to make sure everything with the twins is
ok since I had the bleed two weeks ago, if they are non-identical twins, and we
also wanted to check out why the results came back elevated for the AFP. He
then asked if my OB went over any of the test results with me. I said a little
bit, she said I had 4.55 when anything over 2.5 is high and that this could
mean a neural tube defect, but that’s all I was told. He goes on to say this
“Yes, we’ll check out all those things but it could also mean there’s a problem
or a potential problem with the placenta, placenta abruption, placenta previa,
etc. Your numbers however aren’t as bad as it seems. Your doctor gave you a
4.55 but we here at MFM actually go further to calculate your number. It’s a
long drawn out equation and you have twins so it’s even more mathematical, but
after our research we would give you a number of 2.51 and that is only slightly
elevated. But we’ll take a look today and see what we can find out further, how
does that sound?”
Ummm
fantastic!
We went on
to do the hour long ultrasound and they measured every little part of our
babies bodies and everything came back normal and on track growth-wise. The
last and most important thing we looked at was the babies’ brains. If the
babies had a neural tube defect, we would see an abnormal cerebellum, easier
than looking at their spines at this point. The doctor couldn’t find anything
wrong with either one! He said “these are two very healthy looking babies to me
and I’m happy to report that I do not see any issues now or potential issues
arising. However, I do want to see you every four weeks so we can keep an eye
on them and make sure they do continue to grow as they should. Carrying twins
is nothing like carrying just one. There are a lot of other factors that play a
part here and we want to make sure one baby doesn’t start falling behind growth
wise or that they start fighting each other for oxygen or blood. The positive
thing here is we’re sure they are non-identical twins so they do not share the
same sack or placenta, and they shouldn’t have to fight to survive.”
(Twins with their heads together. They
are both breech)
Wow! What a
birthday gift to give to my husband. Nothing wrong with the babies, and growing
as they should. Thank you Lord! I had already accepted that we would deal with
whatever we needed to but hearing your babies are healthy and on target is
absolutely the best feeling. I can breathe once again. We will be going back
November 21st to confirm the genders
